A recent study by CBI Economics has confirmed that Farnborough Airport plays a vital role in supporting the UK economy, contributing substantial value both locally and nationally.
Located just five minutes from our managed office space at Westmead House, Farnborough Airport is a key asset for business aviation. According to the report, flights operating from the airport generate £1.9 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the UK each year.
In addition to this economic output, the report reveals that around 23,000 full-time equivalent roles are supported as a result of the airport’s activity – demonstrating the broader employment impact driven by business aviation in the region.
Crucially, 80% of all flights from Farnborough are linked directly or indirectly to UK business and investment. These flights are often described as essential and time-critical, underlining their high value to the economy.
The findings, shared in Hampshire Biz News, form part of an economic impact study submitted alongside Farnborough Airport’s planning application to increase its annual flight allowance from 50,000 to 70,000. The local effects are equally compelling: the report estimates the airport supports 2,600 jobs in the surrounding area and injects £170 million of GVA into the local economy each year – helping to position Rushmoor as one of the UK’s fastest-growing local authority areas.
Simon Geere, CEO at Farnborough Airport, said: “These latest findings from CBI Economics support what we have been saying for some time, that the role of business aviation in driving inward investment and creating economic opportunity within the UK is both significant and demonstrable.
“Farnborough Airport in particular, with its well-invested infrastructure and available runway capacity, has a critical role to play in supporting economic growth going forward, both at a local level and also across the wider UK.
Geere highlights how Farnborough Airport’s use of smaller, lighter aircraft means its environmental footprint is “a fraction of that of a traditional commercial passenger airport, yet our economic output relative to our size is completely unsurpassed.”
